This ancient Mediterranean symbol for protection and good fortune is the hand, or hamsa. It goes back 3,000 years as a symbol of protection that brings its owner happiness, health, luck and prosperity. The hamsa has been symbolic in Islam and Judaism, originating from the Phoenicians, used as protection from evil and misfortune.
Hamsas are traditionally shaped with two symmetrical thumbs, but they can also be more like a human hand. It can be facing up or down. Often it includes an eye in the palm, thought to protect from the "evil eye."
I am fascinated with the symbol and have brought it into modern times with my own sense of style and design.
